About

When I’m not deep in a Google Doc or wrangling SEO strategy, you’ll usually find me reading some fantasy or dark academia fiction (@queerlywicked on TikTok), filming content and playing for my local baseball team (@cardiffbaseballclub on Instagram), or playing TTRPGs like D&D, Fallout, and Dark Heresy.I live in Wales with my partner, and I’m passionate about living a creative, intentional life—whether that’s through writing, photography, or trying to master Spanish (emphasis on trying). I’m also a bit of a productivity nerd, a fan of dry humour, and endlessly curious about how people think and behave.

Content Refreshing
for Fiverr

Fiverr is a pretty big brand—one of the most well-known freelancer platforms. In a full-circle moment, I went from being a freelancer providing services via the platform, to freelancing for the platform itself.

The Fiverr platform is massive and several years in business, so it’s no surprise that some of its content is a bit outdated and in need of some love.

In the year leading up to hiring me, this piece of content titled “The Best 7 Video Editing Software for YouTube” was falling flat, eventually hitting a low of 40 organic visits a month.

This piece of content needed a big overhaul—bits of advice and key statistics were out of date. There was also very little addressing the algorithm changes with E-E-A-T best practices. To address these changes, here’s what I did:- Reduced the number of tools in the list, but added more context and detail.
- Added a short TLDR-type list of best tools for different use cases.
- Added a comprehensive evaluation criteria.
- Added my personal experience with video editing to add credibility and internal authority.
- Used in-context screenshots of the tools.
- Updated the internal links for better link equity.

Within two months of the update, the content went from 40 monthly visits to 610, increasing the traffic value by 1300% and overall traffic by 1425%.

We have also seen significant improvements in the SERPs, going from 1 top ranking keyword to 23 (with an additional 47 top 10 keywords). We also see a mixture of SERP features, including:- Featured snippet
- Top ads
- Paid sitelinks
- People also ask
- Top stories
- Video preview
- Thumbnail
- Bottom ads
- AI Overview

While the keywords in the screenshot show fewer organic traffic visits, AI overview is an important SERP feature to gain in zero-click environments.

Content Research for an
eCommerce platform

Providing original research is one of the best ways to stand out against a crowd of competitors using the same recycled stats in their posts. It also maximizes your chances of getting valuable backlinks.

A well-known enterprise ecommerce brand had a monster guide on affiliate marketing — which makes total sense as lots of people use their stores for affiliate products. However, they wanted a way to help their guide stand out against the millions of other affiliate marketing guides online as it’s growth was slow-going.

Enter: Me. The brand commissioned me to develop original insights on affiliate marketing program average commission rates and conversion rates.

To get this data, I gathered 20 affiliate programs across 10 different industries (200 total programs) using an affiliate network. I used a seven-day measurement period and calculated the average commission and conversion rate per industry.

Prior to the content refresh that included our research, the guide was getting between 10–15k in monthly traffic:

Then, after publishing the updated blog, traffic surged up between 40–50K per month for several months, with an estimated $56.1K traffic value (how much the traffic would have cost using paid ads):

It’s unfortunate that the 2023 Google update impacted the traffic significantly. However, the guide is still within the top five results for the valuable keyword “affiliate marketing.”Importantly, over the period of one year after the update that included my research, the guide received over 39K ‘follow’ backlinks:

Content Writing For
Descript

Investing in your website content (i.e., your blog and pillar pages) gives your business a massive boost in chances of discovery — but it is a long-term game. Don’t expect results overnight.

Before mid-2023, Descript saw that their website was growing, but not fast enough for their liking — it took them 5 years to get from 0 traffic to consistently above 1k in monthly traffic. Then it took another year to go from <5k to around 10k (Jan 2022–23). They wanted more.

Descript wasn’t exiting stage left just yet. In mid-2023, they threw down their gauntlets and poured huge investment into their blog — a team effort in which SaaSOCIATE played a part.Descript was dedicated to building a content engine for their blog and used a team of high-quality freelance content writers and agencies to see their vision come alive (no AI generator in sight). In particular, Descript tasked us with the more research-heavy guides, given our experience with conducting research (in academia and content research for clients)

In the space of just one year and a huge effort across the content team in Descript, we more than quadrupled its monthly traffic from approximately 10K monthly traffic to nearly 44K:

Among the pieces of content we produced specifically, we snatched the top results and featured snippets across several keywords:
Descript: The podcast advertising rates guide for 2023

My Thoughts on AI in Content Marketing

The dominant conversation in the content marketing space has treated AI as a production tool—i.e., faster drafts, cheaper copy, more output (always more for less, right?) But the more interesting shift is that AI systems are actually a mechanism for discovery and evaluation infrastructure. When a buyer asks an AI which platform to choose, or whether a vendor is trustworthy, the AI synthesizes information built from whatever signals exist in the training environment (or what is currently available online, if you're using online search models). A lot of brands have little intentional presence in that layer. That's a problem I'm currently working on theoretically—thinking about structured approaches to shape how AI systems represent brands during moments of consideration. In theory, that representation sits at an intersection of content strategy, information architecture, and visibility. My view on AI as a content marketer in the weeds—I use it. All the time.- For content briefing, AI workflows allow for research to happen in minutes instead of hours.
- For content writing, with the right (and extensive) contextual inputs, AI workflows can produce passable first drafts also in minutes instead of hours.
For scaling content operations, AI workflows can do incredible stuff. But on a macro-level, I'm also interested in what AI does with content than just what it can produce. Which means understanding AI as an "audience" as well as a tool. That said, if you're interested in hiring me as a freelance writer for a few one-off projects, I'll be writing them without AI (oftentimes for one-off projects, it's actually quicker compared to setting up AI properly). But if you're interested in developing a long-term business relationship with me, we can talk about building AI infrastructure that works for your brand—I'm a certified AirOps Engineer:
